Those who failed the last STEP 1 by a narrow
margin might want to consider the following observation and advice
from 23 years of my teaching experience in STEP 1 Prep.
Even after you have reached the level of Failure A with 2 points
short(which I call the plateau stage), it takes another 3 tries
to pass the STEP 1 on average and 7 tries if you are very unlucky.
However, if you are very lucky, you can pass it without going through
the plateau stage or even Failure A-(directly from Failure B to
passing). That is why exams are called “a game of chance”.
The downside of repeated failure in exams is that you may have
a negative self-image that can give you emotional stress and undermine
your motivation for continued study. Bu the upside is that your
tenacious effort will build character, deepen your knowledge of
English, and it will give you a great sense of accomplishment if
you overcome the challenge. Therefore, as long as you keep your
spirits up, it will definitely have a positive influence on your
life!
In my 23-year observation, 99 % of the people studying for STEP
1 will get complacent enough to lose their motivation for English
study after passing the exam, with the result that their English
ability will get rusty in the “Empty Test Syndrome”. In contrast,
it is true that your knowledge of English accumulates with a longer
period of English study through several attempts. The longer you
study English, the better command of English you acquire. Therefore,
you can appreciate the seemingly unlucky situation(a blessing in
disguise) that can give you a chance to polish up your English
skill that probably leaves a lot to be desired.
After all, life is a game of chance, but we can keep trying. Let’s
enjoy the process!
